Affordable Fragrances: Smell Good Without Breaking The Bank (Part II)

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Did you like the fragrances listed in part one of this little mini-series? Well, here is part two, bringing you five more amazing fragrances. With so many perfumes on the market at a pleather of prices, it’s hard to find ones that smell great and are worth buying without trying them all first. However, that’s exactly what Alt Edition is for, here to buy, sample and test fragrances (and other beauty products,) so you don’t have to spend your hard-earned coin on anything that you won’t love.

So, if you’re looking for perfumes that won’t break the bank, but smell like they should have, keep on reading.

This is an amber floral fragrance from Guess, with a powdery, sexy scent. This is touted as a dupe for both Mon Guerlain and Dior Addict, or even a mix of the two and I’d have to agree. This fragrance definitely has a masculine edge, drying down into sultry and creamy vanilla. It really gives sitting in a high-class restaurant, in stiletto shoes on a warm evening vibes. I’d class this as a musky gourmand scent, and won’t be to everyone’s liking. So even though I wouldn’t classify this as a safe blind buy, I would say if it sounds appealing to you, it’s definitely worth a test.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the best projection or lasting power, atleast on me. I get about four hours out of this before it becomes a skin scent, though I have read reviews of it lasting much longer on others. However, at such an affordable price and a great smell, tossing this in my bag and reapplying it later is not a problem at all.

I have quite a few Britney Spears fragrances in my collection, and though most err on the fruity side this one is definitely in a different scent family. In my opinion, this is a cheap and cheerful dupe for the beloved Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Opium, probably due to the shared coffee and pink pepper notes. It’s a very warm, spicy scent that would be perfect for the autumn/winter, with relatively good projection and the lasting power of around 3-4 hours, which is to be expected of such a cheap celebrity fragrance. This is definitely one of the better Britney Spears fragrances in my opinion, as it has a lot of depth and is a nice change from the Fantasy collection. A good one to pick up if you’re looking for a spicy fragrance and a good dupe.

It’s no secret I’m a lover of fruity gourmand fragrances, and this Cherry Smoothie from Zara really nails it for me. It really does smell like a delectable cherry and vanilla smoothie, sprinkled with almonds. It’s the kind of fragrance that transports you to a fair, surrounded by friends under the sun. It’s definitely a great fragrance for the summer, and though it is incredibly sweet it’s not overpowering or cloying. It has a touch of Lost Cherry from Tom Ford, though not as strong but far more affordable. Its lasting power is about the same as all Zara fragrances, not the best though not the worst by any means, and Cherry Smoothie in particular has really good projection in my opinion. Every time I’ve worn this fragrance, I’ve gotten a ton of compliments, which was enough to make me grab a second back up bottle, as Zara fragrances go out of stock quite often.

Though not as cheap as the others, £40 for a 100ml of this subtle, soft sweet honey fragrance is a really good deal. Jimmy Choo has a lot of popular fragrances, but I feel like this one is often overlooked. Though listed as a floral fragrance, it has a touch of fruity gourmand, owing to the honey, caramel and vanilla notes. Illicit is my favourite Jimmy Choo perfume, it’s just such a beautiful blend. Though I think this scent would work all year around, it’s definitely more of an Autumn and Winter scent. It doesn’t have a lot of projection, but it does last the entire day on me. I’d typically wear this on a comfy day, something to make me smell amazing whilst I chill with a nice book or have brunch with friends.

This perfume needs no introduction, as well loved and known as it is. Ariana Grande fragrances can be a bit of a hit or miss, but Cloud really is a stand out. This fruity floral is pretty basic in terms of its scent, a simple sweet vanilla with a hint of coconut and musk, wrapped in whipped cream and praline. It’s a very soft, fluffy perfume, which may make it sound childish, but it really suits everyone, at any age. Though it can be worn on its own perfectly fine, I actually find this is an amazing perfume for layering, with something a little heavier but sharing similar notes. A good example of this is mixing Cloud with Burberry Her or Carolina Herrera Good Girl. Whatever you chose to do with it, Cloud is definitely a perfume that needs to be in everyone’s collection.
