Affordable Skin Care: Love Your Face For Less

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Skincare can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. There are some fantastic and effective products available in your local Boots or Superdrug, that will have you on the way to gorgeous, glowing skin, without you side eyeing your bank account. So, let’s talk about them.

Byoma | Creamy Jelly Cleanser

Byoma is an affordable skincare line that focuses on keeping the skin barrier intact. If you’re unsure of why that’s a good thing, a damaged skin barrier can cause things such as dryness, breakouts and inflammation, basically the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

Byoma’s Cream Jelly Cleanser is both hydrating and brightening, containing their tri-ceramide complex - a very fancy way of saying a combination of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, - licorice root and green tea. So, my verdict? I really enjoy this cleanser. Despite my usual dislike of gel products, this one doesn’t feel sticky or tacky on the face and lathers nicely. It leaves my skin looking clean and refreshed, without that dry or tight feeling that can be caused by other cleansers. It also does a fairly good job of brightening my complexion. You’ll see more substantial brightening from products containing Vitamin C or Kojic Acid, but the Licorice Root in here definitely works its magic. I will admit I was pleasantly surprised. It’s quite the little powerhouse in an aesthetic looking package for only £10 and, has become new regular in my morning routine.

Skin Type: Suitable for all skin types.

Skin Effects: Hydration, Skin Barrier, Brightening.

Glow Hub | Nourish and Hydrate Toner Essence

I picked this up off Asos a little while ago and quite enjoyed it, before switching it out for something else. However, lately I’ve revisited it and I don’t believe it’s a product I’ve ever talked about before and, it is worthy of a mention.

Let’s start with the smell of this, because honestly it is a highlight. It smells absolutely incredible, like an array of gorgeous tropical fruits, which makes sense considering it contains peach extract and coconut water. I do find it gives my face a subtle glow after using it, and it also contains hyaluronic acid and aloe vera extract, both great ingredients for hydration. As a cheap little toner, it does the trick. It’s certainly not the best toner out there, but it’s definitely worth giving a go for those of you that prefer to splurge on the actives in your routine, and you can’t go wrong with a reliable toner for only £9.

Skin Type: Suitable for all skin types.

Skin Effects: Hydration, Brightening, Refreshing.

The Ordinary | Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

This is a cult favourite for a lot of people, myself included. It’s a toner with exfoliating properties, containing antioxidants and soothing ingredients. If you are trying to save money or want to minimalize your routine, this basically combines toning and exfoliation into one step, for the small price of £8.

It’s quite renowned for helping to clear acne, unclogging pores and generally evening complexion and fading unwanted pigmentation – the latter two are what I use it for, and it has done a solid job. It also works its magical fingers on rough or bumpy texture.

  • On a side note, to those that struggle with texture, pairing this solution with the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser once or twice a week will reward you with some of the smoothest and softest skin you’ve ever had. Do test this combination first however before applying it to your face, as it may sting or damage your barrier if you aren’t careful.

There is only one downside to this product, and that is it can be too strong for some, especially those with sensitive skin. I’ve personally never had an issue using this, even when I was using it daily, but for most, one or two days a week is enough to reap the rewards of its extended use. Like with all The Ordinary products, patience is key in seeing the results, but for the price, it is well and truly worth a place in your bathroom.

Skin Type: Suitable for all skin types.

Skin Concerns: Uneven Skin Tone, Texture, Dullness, Breakouts.

The Ordinary | Argireline Solution 10%

Another product from the same brand, this serum is my ‘Tiktok made me buy it’ moment. I saw how many people claimed it was the cheaper alternative to Botox. That is a bold claim for a £7.30 product. The Ordinary website describes it as a 'non-injective' solution for dynamic lines, that targets crow's feet and the signs of aging. I bought this for my smile lines, as they are quite deep-set and have always been a bit of a bother for me.

After a month of use, I think there is a slight improvement, but nothing to write home about. However, I will continue to use it in my routine and update you guys in the coming months. Overall, considering I have seen improvement, I’d recommend this serum for those of you who are seeing wrinkles and lines that you want to gradually nip in the bud. Again, with all The Ordinary products, you really must be patient and give them time to work. Can I say this is Botox in a bottle? Not really, though personally I’ve never had Botox so I can’t speak with experience on overall results. However, I can say it is a cheaper alternative to fighting unwanted signs of aging then many other options on the market.

Skin Type: Suitable for all skin types.

Skin Concerns: Crow's feet, Anti-Aging.

L’oreal | Collagen Expert Re-tightening Day Cream

Let me just start by saying, I adore this moisturiser. I picked it up whilst travelling as I didn’t have one on me, and I fell in love. I pair this with the Origins: Overnight Hydrating Avocado & Glacier Water Mask every night, and I have never woken up to such soft, plump and absolutely glowing skin my life. This skyrocketed into my top three favourites moisturisers so quickly, that I bought a backup (I’ve been using the day cream at night, as it was just a little heavy for the summer,) and the night cream for the future.

This has quite a thick consistency, which may not be the best for those with oily skin, but I just can’t get over how damn nourishing it is. This product aims to provide intense hydration and firming for mature and menopausal skin, aswell as reducing the appearance of age spots. It really lives up to its name in terms of hydration and elasticity, atleast for me. Admittedly, I’m a fair few years from menopause (I hope) and at 32, I wouldn’t consider myself to have mature skin, but this works brilliantly for my dehydrated skin and providing plump, elastic skin I thoroughly enjoy. If there is any product on this list that I urge you to go out and buy, especially if you are looking for hydration and skin plumping/firming effects, it’s this one.

Skin Type: Suitable for all skin types.

Skin Effects: Hydration, Firming, Plumping, Elasticity, Fading Pigmentation
