Autumn is the season of falling leaves, cooling temperatures and darkening nights. As such, it’s time to put away the heavy floral and citrus fragrances, in favour of those warmer, richer scents that suit the shifting season. Oriental and woody tend to be the commonly loved autumn fragrances, with notes of amber, vanilla and vetiver. However, this doesn’t mean you’re limited to woody musk perfumes, as gorgeous notes like honey, caramel and even apple add a lovely, comforting sweetness to as musky scent.
Dolce & Gabbana | The Only One
This scent has Autumn written all over it. It’s a cosy, coffee shop fragrance that’s just so comforting and sweet. It shares the same qualities as YSL’s Black Opium, very decadent and rich with its coffee and vanilla notes, but the powdery caramel in this just adds a warmth that gives it an edge in the colder weather. This is a pretty good option for those that don’t like a heavy gourmand, just a subtle sweetness.
Top Notes: Violet, Orange, Bergamot
Middle Notes: Coffee, Pear, Iris, Orange Blossom, Rose
Base Notes: Caramel, Vanilla, Patchouli
Billie Eilish | Eilish
This is a perfect sweater weather scent. A spicy vanilla bomb, with delicious hints of cocoa, tonka bean and musk. It’s very sweet and warm beyond belief. I actually find this fragrance incredibly sexy, it’s the kind of nutty and smooth scent you’d wear to a Jazz Club date. It can be a little heavy on initial spray, but it turns pretty quickly into a creamy skin scent, with fantastic longevity. I have a few celebrity perfumes in my collection, and this shot to first place amongst them after only a few days of wearing it.
Top Notes: Sugar, Red Berries, Mandarin Orange
Middle Notes: Vanilla, Cacao, Spicy Notes, Rose
Base Notes: Tonka Bean, Amber, Musk, Woody Notes
Jimmy Choo | Illicit
Illicit is listed as a floral fragrance, but honestly all I get from this is sweet honey. I find that often honey fragrances tend to smell more like beeswax, which really isn’t appealing to me, so this perfume was pleasantly surprising. A soft and yummy honey, uplifted by the caramel and cashmere wood. It’s one of those easy to pick and up go scents, something you don’t have to worry about or wonder how it will wear. Though it is sweet, it’s not cloying, and despite the ginger, there is no bitterness at all. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have much projection, or lasting power. However, for those cosy, cold nights in doors, in works beautifully.
Top Notes: Ginger, Bitter Orange
Middle Notes: Jasmine Sambac, Orange Blossom, Rose
Base Notes: Honey, Amber, Caramel, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Cashmere Wood
Laura Mercier | Vanille
This is a new fragrance in my collection, and honestly, I wish I had bought it sooner. It can be difficult to find a vanilla fragrance you really vibe with, but this ticks all the boxes for me. It is warm, with just the right amount of sweetness. A floral vanilla with whispers of woodiness that give it depth, and some uniqueness. When I wear this, I am reminded of a delectable creamy vanilla cupcake (my partner agrees,) and it actually has incredibly good longevity for an EDT. This fragrance just adds that tangible warmth I’m lacking in the colder seasons.
Notes: Bourbon Vanilla, Sandalwood, Vanilla Orchid, Musk, Heliotrope, Amber, Lily
Givenchy | Hot Couture
This is a smoky, bold and velvety fragrance that was made for cold weather in my opinion. It’s alluring and seductive, the kind of scent that makes you feel confident. Though it does contain hints of sweetness, this definitely errs more on the warm peppery side, and really shines through when it comes to projection and sillage. I’d say this is definitely an evening perfume, think dinner date or cocktail bar. Though this smells amazing all year round, it just really shines in the cold, and I can definitely see myself finishing my bottle before the year is out.
Top Notes: Raspberry, Bergamot, Orange
Middle Notes: Pepper, Vetiver, Magnolia
Base Notes: Sandalwood, Amber, Musk
Narciso Rodriguez | Musc Noir Rose
This is a musky tuberose that too me, screams powdery vintage. The dark juicy plum blends beautifully with the vanilla and pink pepper, to create something that admittedly isn’t entirely unique, but definitely stands out in the crowd. This makes me think of the 1990’s era, something I’d pair with a black slip dress, a bold lip and diamond earrings. Expensive, sophisticated and sensual and, most definitely sweater weather appropriate. Musc Noir Rose is a femme fatale fragrance, winter edition.
Top Notes: Plum, Pink Pepper, Bergamot
Middle Notes: Musk, Rose, Tuberose
Base Notes: Vanilla
