Summer Hygiene: Tips & Tricks

Updated: Oct 20, 2023

Hot Girl Summer here we come! Except, when you are female, summer can present a few problems that can take the fun out of the sun. The last thing you want to be doing is feeling insecure or stressed, when you should be vibing on a beach without a care in the world. So, let’s talk about some prevalent issues summer can present and how to deal with them, so you can enjoy the most out of the weather.

Thigh rub

My god is thigh rub a complete pain the arse. There’s nothing worse than feeling amazing in a mini skirt or floaty dress, living your best life only for a few hours in, between sweat and skin friction, to be cursing under your breath because your thighs are on fire.

Thigh rub is an unfortunate circumstance of having thicker thighs, but it needn’t be a painful one. You can deal with thigh rub in a few ways, but from personal experience these are the best options I’ve found.

1. Cycling shorts – Make sure they’re a light, breathable material and tight, so they don’t interfere with the silhouette of your outfit. It’s also a good idea to match the colour with your outfit so if they are seen, they aren’t too obvious. Cycling shorts can be a little long, so if you’re wearing a mini, pull them up so they are covering only the areas you need without showing underneath. Or get some shorts that have lace around the hem so if they do peek through, it looks intentional. You can actually get anti-chaff shorts aswell, but I find the normal shorts to be slightly more comfortable and cheaper.

2. Deodorant – Weird I know, but using a deodorant on the parts of your thighs that rub, helps with any sweat that may build up in the area, which can worsen chafing, so you want to nip it in the bud before it starts.

3. Powder – Whether its Talc, baby power or any body powder you choose, it can work a charm. It can be a little messy so make you sure use this before getting dressed. However, powder is great because it sticks to your skin and will help soak up any moisture, whilst creating a barrier between the chafing skin.

4. Anti-Chafing Products – There are a ton of anti-chafing products on the market, but not all of them work as they should. I haven’t tried every product out there, but of the ones I have, these are my recommendations: Gold Bond Friction Defense (£12.99.) I have been using this product for a long time now, not only for the warmer weather, but for exercising aswell. It is quite long lasting and can be easily reapplied throughout the day if needed. Lanacane Anti-Chafing Gel (£6.) This is another pretty popular one, but it really does work. Despite being a gel, I didn’t find it sticky or greasy, and it lasted a good amount of time. It’s also inexpensive, so you won’t have to worry about spending too much extra holiday money. Vaseline – now we all probably have some Vaseline at home. It works just as well as any specific chaffing products and it’s a good moisturiser aswell.

Boob Sweat

I’m sure every woman out there understands the stress of under-boob sweat, or sweating around the chest in general. Not only is it uncomfortable, but if not taken care of properly, it can cause issues in the future and be the cause of unwanted odour. So, how do you keep it under check when the sun is working against you?

1. Daily Washing - One of the best things for sweat in general to make sure you are cleaning the area, daily. This however is especially true for areas of your body where your skin is rubbing together or constantly in contact with something else. A daily thorough cleaning around the area will help combat sweat and keep the area fresh. If you feel a build up throughout the day, it’s a good idea to keep wipes on you, so you can freshen up.

2. Bra’s - It goes without saying that wearing a leather bra is out of the question when it’s 25 degrees outside. Try to wear bras made of light, breathable material. Or if you can get away with it, a bralette or even no bra at all. If you want to opt for no bra, but are worried about support, wearing a tight bodysuit or tank top that will help restrict the movement of your chest is a good idea.

3. Handheld fan - Keeping the area cool is a long shot, but bring a handheld fan and using it when you begin to feel a little too hot down there is a way to cool down the area and help combat it feeling sticky and uncomfortable.

4. Deodorant - Using deodorant underneath and around your chest is also another great way to combat sweat and odour, also reducing friction. Add a little bit of powder to the affected areas, before applying deodorant to help ease the friction and combat excess sweat.

Hygiene

Now, this isn’t just a female problem, everyone should be vigilant when it comes to their hygiene in the summer. However, as sweating can be exacerbated on the female body your hygiene routine is incredibly important. Obviously, you cannot avoid sweating, however there are some things you can do maintain freshness and control odour throughout the day.

1. Wash twice, daily - Use a bar soap with an exfoliating wash cloth or exfoliating gloves, followed by a body wash of your choice and a wash cloth. Making sure you cleanse your body twice and are exfoliating, will work to eliminate any sweat, dirt and body odour. Helping you maintain freshness throughout the day.

2. More Deodorant - Applying twice the amount of deodorant can go a long way in making sure your underarms aren’t a problem half way through the day. You can always pop it in your bag and take it with you, so you can freshen up later.

3. Body care - Summer time calls for light lotions and moisturisers. To avoid feeling wet and sticky, opt for lighter body creams and oils, that absorb quickly.

4. Fragrances – You want to opt for lighter fragrances during the summer, as heavy ones can become to intoxicating or irritating in the heat. Flowery or fruity smells work best, and you can pop some in a travel spray to take with you, to re-use throughout the day if needed.

5. Wipes – Wipes for freshening up are key. Personally, I use only intimate wipes, so that if I feel I need to freshen up the kitty, I don’t have to worry about any unwanted chemicals or fragrances.

6. Hydration – Staying hydrated is essential in the summer. Not only for your health, but also for your hygiene. You lose a lot of water through sweat, and water flushes out toxins from body and helps maintain a healthy pH balance. So, drinking water is key.
