The Basics Of Smelling Good

Smelling good is a package, an entire head to toe routine. It is also, something I absolutely love and think I’ve gotten pretty damn good at over the years. To me, smell is a crucial part of self-care, another step in feeling good, both mentally and physically. When I know I smell good, I feel good, and I want you guys to feel good too. So, if you’ve come to learn how to smell good, and have it last throughout the day, I’ve got the steps and the products to point in the right direction.

Oral Hygiene

Let’s be honest, no one likes bad breath. However, simply brushing your teeth or doing a quick floss, isn’t going to cut it. A good mouthwash and a tongue brush alongside your regular clean, are going to be your best friends in this endeavour. Include both of these in your morning and night routines, for fresh breath and whiter teeth, making sure to swap out your tools regularly to avoid any bacteria build-up. For when you’re outside your home, always keep a packet of chewing gum handy in your bag or a mouth spray top up, just in case you had garlic for lunch.

My Picks:

Shower Routine

In order to smell good, you need to be keeping your body clean. Body odour will be your number one enemy and no one is above being sweaty or dirty. So, make sure you are thoroughly washing your body daily, paying special attention to your armpits, groin area, and feet. I highly recommend always washing twice, first with a bar soap, then with a bodywash, to really get rid of any unwanted odour.

However, what you use in the shower, is just as important as the shower itself when it comes to this particular routine. You want to use bodywashes or bar soaps that not only smell good, but that scent lingers on your skin long after you’ve finished. This can be a little tricky, and it may take some time and investment to find the right products for you, but when you do, it will be hitting the right spot every time.

My Picks:

Tip: Don’t forget to wash your hair regularly, a dirty scalp does not smell good.

Post Shower Routine

The core element of smelling good, really lies in the post shower portion of this routine. Get this on point, and you will be smelling divine all day.

Moisturiser: Much like the bodywash, you will want to use something with a strong scent, that lingers on your skin and compliments your fragrances. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for good smelling lotions or body butters to not be the most hydrating, yet that doesn’t mean you have to suffer dry skin. If this is the case for a moisturiser you love, don’t be afraid to mix it with another lotion. Preferably one with little to no scent, as to not overpower the fragrance of the original.

My Picks:

Johnsons Baby Lotion (great for layering)

Body Oil: As hydration is a factor when it comes to smelling good, no matter what moisturiser I use, I tend to use an oil afterwards. A good body oil will pull your routine from a 7 to a 10 instantly. If it shares a similar fragrance to your lotion, then that’s great, but if not, use one with a subtle smell, or none at all. Not only will you smell good, but your skin with be hydrated and healthy. The best of both worlds.

My Picks:

Deodorant: Antiperspirant or deodorant is a must! After all they are designed to reduce sweating and neutralize odours. Apply a solid amount in the morning, and if you can, pop it or a travel sized version in your bag, in case you may need to reapply throughout the day.

My Picks:

Tip: Always wear clean clothing, and find a laundry combination that not only makes your clothes smell lovely, but it lasts throughout the day.

Fragrance & Layering

Perfumes and body sprays are the cherry on top of your smell good cake. When it comes to fragrances, there is practically a limitless selection, a wonderous bottle out there to fit everyone’s tastes. Again, try to match your perfumes to your other products. If you layered on the fruits, go for something fruity gourmand. Leaned heavily into lavender? Break out the florals. Don’t be afraid to layer two perfumes, or mix different scents together to create a unique combination, whilst improving the projection and longevity of some scents.

Combinations I love:

Hair

Hair tends to be forgotten about, but really, it’s one the first things people will smell, especially if it smells bad. So, don’t be afraid to spritz a little perfume in your hair, or specifically use a hair perfume. The Sol De Janeiro body sprays are a godsend in this area, as they are made for both the hair and body, and have a few different scents that work for a multitude of layering options.

Tip: Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins from your body, doing wonders for smell and overall health.

Cheers to smelling good!
